“The intent in the painting, ‘Superiority,’ was to highlight the light bird against a dark background. Prairie Falcons are known for their beautiful pale plumage so a solid dark background of raw umber was chosen. I will often leave out a background so that the bird can be highlighted in a dramatic way. This painting is more about being a portrait of this expressive falcon rather than recording the bird in its habitat. Sometimes, a subject is most impressive standing alone against a dramatic, dark background so that its beauty can speak for itself.”
